The throat, leade, and pressure spec's are different between the 2, but the rifle and load determine what it likes. In an AR, it might be significant, but my bolt guns have never hiccupped. So if you chamber a 5.56 in a .223 chamber yippy will jam the bullet into the lands and raise chamber pressures to the point of blowing primers and such. The 5.56 had an excessive amout of throat and will chamber either easily.
